Yesterday was a momentous day in the U.S. House of Representatives. On a bipartisan 38-12 vote, the House Energy & Commerce Committee sent the FDA tobacco bill to the full House! This clears a big hurdle on the path to passing this legislation. This historic legislation will give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration the authority it needs to regulate tobacco products, which are responsible for more than 438,000 deaths each year. The American Lung Association is pushing for the entire House of Representatives to vote on the bill later this month. We would like to thank you and your fellow advocates from across the country who have worked so hard to keep the pressure on Congress to move this legislation forward.
Next week, on April 8th advocates from across the country will come to Washington to participate in the American Lung Association’s Capitol Hill Advocacy Day. Volunteers will be meeting face to face with their Senators and Members of Congress to ask them to pass this lifesaving legislation this year. You can be a “virtual” Advocacy Day participant from the comfort of your own home or office. Mark your calendars and join us in urging Congress to support giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority over tobacco products. We will send you a reminder along with talking points on April 8th. Thank you in advance for your participation!
