Those are three pieces of mobile electronic devices I need/want.
My oldish Samsung mp3 player got dropped and the battery shows from behind the speaker. My Blackjack (first gen!) is soon eligible for upgrade. I’ve discovered I want an electronic dictionary for school. Money is an issue.
Cell phone requirements:
1. left hand friendly touch screen
2. decent to good web browsing
3. some customization – my own ‘home screen’ picture and my own ring tones
4. GOOD battery life – my blackjack can go 2 days without a charge, definitely charge it if I spent a lot of the day texting (and I have unlimited texting plan)
5. things I don’t need – cell phone is not for work so I don’t have requirements like a good exchange server platform for emails
6. reliably able to check GMAIL
7. not too heavy. the htc fuze is a smidge on the heavy side
8. have at&t. want to keep family plan.
9. almost forgot. qwerty keyboard. I’m not sure a physical keyboard is necessary.
mp3 player requirements:
1. ogg support – in some way
2. 8 GB minimum
3. the less proprietary the better
4. no stupid software
5. battery life!
6. easy to carry in my pocket/similar
1. more is better, need like college level
2. don’t need translator
All that being said…
Will an iphone (which I’m not sure I want) fulfill all my requirements and save me money?
I hate AT&T. But, they are the lesser of multiple evils when considering the options, the phones available and what you can do with your phone. (Verizon locks down their phones more than AT&T, otherwise I’d switch to Verizon. Probably.)
My husband and I have 2 PDA/smart phones/etc phones with unlimited data. Until today he had 200 texts/month and I had unlimited texts a month. We had old plans they don’t offer anymore. To get unlimited texts on his line I had to get family plan unlimited texts. The rep told me my bill is going to increase about 25 bucks. (She was nice by the way.)
Because I have old plans not offered anymore.
The supervisor I talked to after her to complain about how AT&T treats their customers in general seemed to think I was saving money. He told me the old line by line for unlimited texts was 20 bucks each. Well, if that’s the case how would my bill increase by 25 bucks? (I’d be adding 1 20 buck charge…)
And his best guess as to why text messaging now costs more is because of the national inflation rate. Sooooo AT&T can charge more for text messages because of inflation. Right.
It got fun when he tried to tell me I was having trouble adjusting to the new charges. Riiiiiiiight. After trying to apologize. Why are you trying to apologize when you can’t change anything? That’s when I decided to get off the phone. Cell phone companies seem to exist in a slightly different reality.
And, on a side note. When did mute turn into hold? The rep told me she was putting me on hold but I’d still be able to hear her. That’s not hold, that’s mute. And when I worked in the call center business mute was BAD. Also, last I knew, mute buttons were not 100% guaranteed to actually work. Maybe AT&T has awesome something or other…
So, AT&T = Time Warner. One more corporation that has monopolistic characteristics that someone needs to do something about that will probably keep getting worse.
So, I had a credit card that was run by a big big credit card company that starts with H. and ends with S. B. C. They decided to close it out because of inactivity.
So I called to find out why. (No, I don’t have this verbatim anymore… just enough for the jist of it all.)
The automated system told me my account was closed but still gave me payment information options…
Once I got a live person I asked why the account got closed. I was told because of inactivity, once accounts are inactive for more than 4 months they are closed, and the last transaction on my account was August 08. So I say again, why. And I’m told this is specifically in the membership agreement. The membership agreement says four months of inactivity leads to account being closed… or something similar.
So I’m thinking, ok, I wonder when this got added to the “membership agreement.” So I ask, when was this added. She’s confused at first as to what my question is.. so I point out I know the membership agreement can be changed at any time thanks to the other notice I got about how my cash advance limit was changing. She says the membership agreement only says the account can be closed for inactivity. Nothing about time period. After telling me different. She does tell me the membership agreement was last updated April 08.
So, while a complete waste of time, the phone call does tell me one thing. While it’s annoying to now have only 1 credit card (what if that one gets hosed by the recession as well?), losing this card is definitely not a loss.
1 lb meat of your choice (we have used ground bison, chicken tenders, ground italian sausage, and various forms of link sausage)
1/2 medium onion (red or yellow) chopped
2 stalks celery chopped
2 medium carrots chopped
1 bunch of asparagus with the tough ends trimmed off (about a pound)
2 jars pasta sauce (our favorite brand is Blumetti’s, but any brand that doesn’t have water in it, or at least doesn’t have water as first ingredient will work)
1 package pasta (we typically use whole wheat pasta, either spaghetti, linguine, or penne lately)
1-6 cloves garlic (cook with the onion, carrot and celery)
* Cook the meat and set aside (I slice the chicken tenders into small bits before cooking, and typically will boil the link sausages and then slice them, otherwise just brown the ground meat, ground meat or chicken is usually seasoned with garlic salt and pepper)
* Place a small amount of oil in a saute pan (pan choice is really up to you) and heat it over medium heat, then add the onion, carrots, and celery, and cook until soft (few minutes at most)
* Add the asparagus to the onion, carrot, celery mixture, and cook for a minute or two (this is optional)
* Combine meat, veggies, and sauce in a large pan (I prefer to use a pan that will also accomodate the pasta once it is cooked)
* Bring mixture to a simmer, and let it simmer for however long you want, the longer the better (I try to at least give it 30 minutes)
* I add dried oregano, basil, and/or grated parmesan to the sauce depending on what I feel like and what kind I have (cheaper sauce I am more likely to doctor)
* Cook pasta according to directions
* Add drained pasta to sauce, mix well, serve, and enjoy
Note: This isn’t my recipe. This is my husband’s recipe. Honestly, he’s a better cook than I am because he likes to cook. I can cook and cook well enough, I’m out of practice at this point though. (He’s been cooking while I’m in school so I have more time for things like homework and other household chores.) Cooking I do is usually limited to baking and my own mother’s recipes. That being said, this is a very reliable recipe that will do better with better quality foods. We’ve had it bomb with less than good spaghetti sauce and asparagus is excellent in spaghetti sauce.
Happy Groundhog’s Day… or Happy <del>Lammas</del>.
So, I’m an idiot. I called February 2nd Lammas. It’s not. It’s Imbolc (or other many many names). Silly me, or something. Lammas is August 1st/2nd. That’s on Wikipedia too.
I reset/repotted the aloe in the bucket to assist with its recovery after it freezing. There’s a pot with catnip seeds in it. There’s a smaller pot with basil seeds in it. One of the spider plants is a loss so I put the pot outside. The other one is still hanging on.
I transplanted the last aloe shoot that was with the aloe-in-the-bucket. I now have 5 aloe plants. I’ve noticed keeping the shoots in small pots seems to limit them to that pot. There’s one really nice looking small aloe that’s doing quite well at the kitchen sink/window. No more transplanting of aloe shoots, unless I can give them away.
I sprayed some water/vinegar mix on the daisy, the lavender, and the still-hanging-on spider plant since I seem to have bugs around those.
We’ll see how stuff goes. I’m not sure it’s warm enough to have the catnip seeds outside but they are also seeds from last season. Does that matter?
Hopefully the basil will start growing and then I can start something else from seed. I’m not starting multiple things in multiple small pots and then not knowing which is which. That’s silly.
I might give up on spider plants and just keep pots of cat grass continually. We’ll have to see. I still need to situate/reorganize the patio but I’d prefer it to be warmer first.
This is the first time ever… and not because I’m too young… that I’ve actually been looking forward to seeing a new president take the oath of office.
Are you a gamer? Do you enjoy D&D games in any shape or form? Do you read OOTS? (If you know D&D and don’t read OOTS, you should.) Do you donate to charities? Anyways… if you answered yes to all of these. Don’t contribute to this charity anymore. The just mentioned charity refused the money raised during GenCon 2008 because it was partly raised through the selling of horrible, evil, scary D&D materials.
Simply based on the prevalency of the Internet, video games, computer games, and, well, who knows what else, this is stupid. Especially when it’s money for starving children. This is, bullshit. I can’t hope this charity doesn’t receive less money since they help starving children, but I do have to wonder whether other charities that help starving children deserve the money more. There does definitely seem to be similar charities that work more efficiently.

It turns out now is a tough time to buy a hybrid for a number of reasons. The Civic Hybrid might be too small for you. The Prius is a little funny shaped (OP and I couldn’t see the hood/front of the car). Any of the other hybrids were either out of our price range, or not worth the name. An Escape Hybrid is silly IMO. Also why buy a current generation hybrid, like the Prius, when supply cannot meet demand and salesman are basically telling you they don’t have to offer deals on these cars, they can even jack up the price if they want? And, then there’s the fact that new Priuses are coming out beginning next year.
I also have to say the Scion xB (the new and redesigned “box”) has been ruined on the inside by the monster center console. I didn’t like the Honda Accord sedan and had too many misgivings about the Honda Accord Coupe. He likes the Honda Accord Coupe.
We also test drove a VW Rabbit. Him first. Me second, a few days later. It took him a little while to realized he liked the Rabbit and liked a lot of things about the Rabbit. He really wanted the Accord Coupe at first – which was funny looking and had a poorly organized dash and horrible back seat. Besides the cosmetics, the Rabbit has a better warranty and nicer safety features or features in general – like the full size spare and the 10 speaker sound system.
So, we decided on the Rabbit. We aren’t going to buy the car for like another month… but we’d both like to get it done and over with. Also, the VW dealership was the only dealership we didn’t have a bad experience.
Right about the time I started the homeopathy treatment and went off allergy pills (maybe a month before) we bought a new loveseat to replace a hand me down couch. The loveseat has down in it. The down is becoming more and more of a problem. Recently, because of falling and injuring my knee, I’ve spent a lot of time sitting on the aforementioned loveseat. My asthma is pissed. I’m now needing daily (twice yesterday) breathing treatments with the nebulizer. It’s still not as bad as when I got the flu though. And I’ve just got a cough for the most part. I’m not sure if the sudafed to combat the allergies/sinus problems or the aspirin/ibuprofen have affected the asthma either. But, today should tell me, no more aspirin after the dose I took this morning and no more ibuprofen for now. All of this started with a bad bout with my allergies too! Just another reason as far as I’m concerned to no longer continue the homeopathy treatment – or at least not with the last doctor.
It turns out searching for a couch with no down in it could be expensive. Shopping from IKEA it means we might be purchasing leather.
On the other hand, I’ve discovered that a heating pad on my back helps calm down tight chest muscles – side effect of coughing. I might start using the heating pad on my back any time I use the nebulizer.
I got my purse from LLBean yesterday. It’s niiiiice. It’s too big though. Told OP that if I ever buy a leather purse again, if it doesn’t actually smell of leather…. that means don’t buy it. This has lovely construction. There’s a few things I have to get used to. Like the wallet. The wallet is huge but I think I will end up falling in love with it. The bigger wallet is also easier to find in the bigger purse. The purse actually is sorta backpack in construction.
I guess if anyone reading this blog has any question of whether the writer (me!) is female… this will probably clear it up. Any question of whether or not I am indeed not the average female will probably also be cleared up.
I currently have a brown leather purse I purchased from a Wilson Leather Outlet. Well, today I switched back to the previous purse I was using. The Wilson leather purse has worn like shit and is beginning to look like shit. There appears to be some kind of double layer to the leather, something is wearing off the leather. There is where I point out I had a very nice leather purse from Wilson’s which I bought in a regular store. I used it for about 2 years before trashing it because one of my cats (who I had to give up not long after for a number of reasons) peed on it. Not really worth it to get a 60-70 dollar purse cleaned… easier to buy another purse.
The previous purse I switched back to is actually a faux leather/as in vinyl probably purse that came from Target. That purse has worn better than the Wilson’s purse!! Needless to say, even accounting for the fact that I bought it from an outlet, I’m very hesitant to purchase another purse from Wilson’s. Oh. I still have my leather wallet I bought when I bought my first Wilson’s purse. It’s holding up nicely!
My problem. I hate the current trend that has attacked purses/handbags/etc. Everything that I saw on Coach’s website looks like ass in some shape or form. I’ve looked at: Dillards, JC Penney’s, Target, Wilson’s and a number of other websites. Even places like overstock.com. I found out Fossil makes purses. I wanted to see if Bass still makes purses and if they have a website… but no luck there.
I did find a nice looking purse on LLBean’s website. But, it’s 150 bucks so I’m not going to just drop the cash on it. (Being the full time college student/part time self employed person that I am.) It guess it’s so difficult for me to find a purse/handbag I like because I prefer: leather, a shoulder strap, more than one pocket/or compartment because of what I always carry and a simple look.
Simple doesn’t describe any overpriced monstrosity that Coach is currently selling.
